16 THE GREAT STAMPEDE

THE NEXT MORNING they moved on, following the Missouri. The river was flowing south and Zach figured they had traveled twenty to twenty five miles each of the last few days without incident. As they started out on the fifth morning of following the big river, Jimbo took the lead running out just as far in front as he usually did. There was a breeze starting up, blowing from the south and soon Zach could tell something was bothering his big dog. After being on the trail for a couple of hours Jimbo came back to him with his hair standing on end down the center of his back and growling his soft low growl that came from deep in his throat.

They stopped and while Running Wolf, Benny, and Buffalo Heart stayed with the women Zach and Red Hawk followed Jimbo downstream. No more than a half mile ahead they found where several men had camped. The coals of their fire were still warm to the touch. Red Hawk started looking for horse tracks and found none, but Zach found where there had been two canoes pulled up onto the bank. Whoever had camped there were all wearing moccasins but Zach couldn’t tell if they were white men or Indians for they had left nothing behind. Zach then sent Jimbo back to bring the rest of them up to where he and Red Hawk where waiting.

He had an uneasy feeling he didn’t understand. Whoever had camped there had left on the river and if they were going downstream they would be far ahead of him and his party, so they would not be a threat. If they were going upstream he believed he would have seen them, but he hadn’t. His uneasiness came from not knowing where or who they were.

There was a small knoll rising from the prairie not far ahead and just a few hundred yards from the river. Zach sent Red Hawk out to see what he could from that vantage point while they waited for the others to catch up. Red Hawk had been taught well, he crawled to the top of the little knoll and carefully parted the grass to study the other side. What he saw surprised him; once again there were buffalo stretching out away from the river for as far as he could see. There were thousands of them and as he raised his head a little higher he saw six hunters waiting near the bottom of the opposite side of the knoll. Red Hawk had no idea what tribe these hunters were from and not knowing whether or not they would be friendly he carefully moved out of sight then hurried to his horse and back to Zach to report on what he had found.

The others had reached Zach by the time Red Hawk rejoined them and Zach was worried when he heard the hunters were less than a mile away but if they were occupied with hunting he hoped they might be able to sneak past them.
